The Church, Part 3

The last two weeks I have tried to explain what being the “the church of God” means. I used the analogy of buildings to help us see that sometimes we carry the attitude of ownership into God’s church. Another useful analogy would be that of an event planner or organizer. From fundraisers to social events, we all enjoy interesting speakers, fun entertainment, cool music, and great friends. Scottsboro certainly has its share of talented event planners and fun events. But hopefully, those do not share the same goals of the church. Remember the church is His, and it should be a reflection of who He is and His glory – not who we are and what our culture is becoming.

We started last week looking at the phrase “the church of God.” Paul, in an effort to put down the boasting in men that was taking place at the church in Corinth, begins laying a foundation of how everything and everyone in the church belongs to God. From the giftedness of the people to the people themselves, it all belongs to God. Paul will do this throughout the letter (see 1 Corinthians 1:2, 2:4, 3:9, 3:16, and others). Since the Father built the church on the testimony of His Son and paid for each and every member through the blood of His Son, God can govern and guide the church the way He desires.

When conversations start over how the church is doing in our day, there are those who like to romanticize the early church. They would like to return to “how it was” and appeal to the record found in Acts 2:42-47 when the church was devoted to the Word of God and each other – to the Table and to prayer. Not to mention that they were selfless toward one another and willingly shared anything they possessed. Sounds wonderful, I will certainly admit, but where there are people, problems soon follow.
