Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6073 is reminding students, educators and families across Scottsboro and Jackson County that the deadline for its annual youth and educator recognition contests is midnight, October 31, 2025.
Entries for the Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen, Teacher of the Year, and Scout of the Year programs must be submitted to VFW Post 6073 by the deadline.
The Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen competitions are part of the VFW’s 79th annual youth scholarship initiative, which will distribute nearly $2.4 million in awards nationwide. This year’s theme, “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”, encourages students to reflect on civic values and personal contributions to American ideals.
Voice of Democracy: Open to high school students in grades 9–12. The national first-place winner will receive a $35,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for the Founding Forward Spirit of America Youth Leadership program.
Patriot’s Pen: Open to middle school students in grades 6–8. Essays of 300–400 words are required. The top national prize is $5,000.
Teacher of the Year: Recognizes elementary, middle and high school educators who promote patriotism and civic responsibility. Nominations must be submitted to a local VFW post by October 31.
Scout of the Year: Honors outstanding members of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other youth organizations who demonstrate leadership and service. Local entries for Jackson County are due October 31st.
According to VFW National Headquarters, more than 86,000 students participated in last year’s scholarship contests.
“Programs like these strengthen civic engagement and highlight the importance of patriotism, service, and educational excellence,” said Samuel Mash, Commander of VFW Post 6073.
Local residents, educators and civic leaders are encouraged to help spread the word and support students and teachers preparing entries. For more information, please contact Gayla Sue Mendez at 678-698-0218 or via email at gaylasuemendez@gmail.com.
