Scottsboro Council discusses Drama Club grant request, fuel bids and pool chemicals

The Scottsboro City Council held a work session last Monday evening, taking up three matters ranging from the arts to city operations.
The session opened with a presentation from Scottsboro High School Drama Club Director Katie Brogdon, who requested $5,000 in tourism grant funds. Last year, the city awarded the club $1,000, and Brogdon began her remarks by expressing gratitude for that support.
She told the council the increased request stems from the club’s desire to improve facilities, expand marketing, and raise the quality of productions. Brogdon emphasized the broader benefits of investing in the arts, describing the stage as “more than a platform.”
“The stage is a magnet,” she said. “A well-supported drama program can help turn Scottsboro into a destination, not just somewhere on the map.”
Brogdon noted that the club’s performances already attract regional audiences beyond the usual parents, grandparents and alumni. Visitors from outside Alabama have attended, she said, and she believes stronger productions could draw larger audiences and encourage guests to spend more time in the city.
This year’s production of The Descendants — a play about the children of Disney villains attending school alongside the children of heroes — will run December 10–14, with an additional performance compared to last year. Brogdon also outlined plans to partner with local restaurants and lodging providers on package deals that would encourage audiences to make a weekend of their visit.
The council agreed to place the request on this week’s agenda for a vote.
The council also reviewed its annual fuel bids. City Clerk Whitney Phillips reported that five bids had been mailed and will be opened next Monday. The council agreed to move the matter forward for action at its next meeting.
In other business, Phillips said that after reviewing city spending on pool chemicals, the total amount falls below the state bid limit. With only one company on the city’s bid list, officials decided not to seek bids for pool chemicals this year.
