Retired educator spends days helping others

For individuals living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other conditions that cause restlessness or anxiety, a simple handmade creation can bring moments of calm and connection. One of these creations, known as fidget mats, is a small, fabric-based activity mat designed to keep hands and minds engaged.

Each fidget mat is stitched with care and creativity, featuring textures and objects like zippers, buttons, ribbons, pockets, and soft fabrics. Every piece is thoughtfully chosen to offer sensory comfort and gentle stimulation. The mats help ease agitation.

One local volunteer, Peggy Wallace, a retired teacher and active member of the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association as well as volunteer with North Alabama Hospice and Meals on Wheels, spends hours crafting each mat. She donates them to local nursing homes, and assisted living facilities, or anyone in need.

Wallace also taught 4th grade in the Scottsboro City School system for well over 27 years.
She ensures every mat is safe and durable, with each button, zipper, and ribbon securely sewn in place.

Her dedication allows those experiencing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s or dementia to find peace through touch — each mat a small act of kindness and compassion.

“These mats are made with love,” Wallace says. “If they can bring even a moment of comfort to someone who’s struggling, then it’s worth every hour it takes.”
Her handmade gifts are more than crafts, they’re a reminder that simple acts of service can bring warmth, dignity and comfort to those who need it most.

Fidget mats (sometimes called sensory mats or activity mats) are small, handmade fabric mats designed to provide tactile and sensory stimulation for people — especially those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism or anxiety.

Fidget mats help calm restless hands and minds. Many people with memory loss, dementia or sensory processing disorders experience agitation, nervous energy or confusion. Keeping their hands busy with safe, familiar activities can reduce anxiety, improve focus and bring comfort.

Each mat is usually made from fabric and decorated with a variety of textures and small objects that can be safely touched, moved or manipulated.

Common features include:
•Zippers (to zip/unzip)
•Buttons, snaps or Velcro
•Ribbons, beads or lace
•Pockets and flaps
•Soft fabrics like fleece or denim for varied textures
•Small sensory items such as buckles, felt shapes or key rings
The mats are typically lap-sized, easy to wash, and made with care to ensure all pieces are securely attached and safe.
These mats can be used by many including:
•Elderly individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia in nursing homes or assisted living facilities
•Children or adults with autism or ADHD who benefit from sensory input
•Hospice patients who find comfort through touch

Wallace uses multiple textures of fabric, zippers, large spools, Velcro and fabric placemats to make these fidget mats. Fabric placemats are often hard to come by. If you or someone you know would like to donate any of these supplies, please email heather@theclarion.org., reduce anxiety, and often spark warm memories of familiar textures and motions.
