How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?
Scottsboro and Jackson County are proud to be home to individuals who believe in service, community and honor. As we reflect on what patriotism truly means, VFW Post 6073 is honored to champion programs that give our young people a voice – and an opportunity – to express their love and support for our great nation.
Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy® audio-essay program invites high school students in grades 9–12 to explore democratic ideals through a recorded essay centered on a patriotic theme. With over $1.4 million in scholarships and incentives awarded annually, students have a chance to turn their reflections on freedom and service into a life-changing opportunity. The national first-place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to their American university, college or vocational/technical school. State winners each receive at least $1,000, with additional national scholarships ranging from $1,000–$21,000.

Middle school students, grades 6–8, are invited to take part in the Patriot’s Pen® essay contest, where they draft a 300- to 400-word essay that explores their understanding of patriotism. With nearly $1 million in state and national awards, the program empowers young voices to reflect on America’s history and their role in shaping its future. The national winner receives $5,000, and each first-place state winner earns a minimum of $500.

• All essays must be submitted to a local participating VFW Post by midnight, October 31, 2025, along with the 2025-2026 entry form. The entry forms can be found at www.vfw.org under Youth Scholarships – VFW.

Why this matters in Jackson County
In Scottsboro and across Jackson County, we celebrate the spirit of community. Here, patriotism lives not just in holidays but in the everyday actions of citizens, students and local leaders. Representing our county in national programs is a powerful way to showcase what makes our home special: deep-rooted values, respect for service and commitment to growth.

We urge educators, youth group leaders, clergy and community organizers to include these contests in your curricula and youth activities. Use them as a tool to spark meaningful dialogue about what patriotism means today – and how the next generation is living it out in real time.

A call to our community
At a time when American unity is more essential than ever, we believe every citizen has a role to play in supporting our young patriots. Through these essay programs, we learn how our youth interpret service, freedom, sacrifice and national pride. Jackson County’s voice deserves to be heard – and celebrated.
VFW Post 6073 humbly asks for your support. Whether you’re a veteran, parent, teacher, neighbor or proud citizen, help us spread the word, encourage participation and invest in the future of American leadership.

For questions or to get involved, reach out to VFW Post 6073. The point of contact is Jr. Vice Commander Gayla Sue Mendez at 678-698-0218.
