Night to Shine: A decade of dignity and joy

Published:

For the past ten years, something extraordinary has been happening in Scottsboro.
One night each year, hundreds of people from every corner of our community come together to transform Agape Baptist Church into a red-carpet celebration of joy, dignity and love known as “Night to Shine”.
Launched by the Tim Tebow Foundation, Night to Shine is a worldwide prom experience for individuals with special needs, ages 14 and up. It’s a night when every guest is treated like royalty, welcomed with paparazzi, crowned as kings and queens, and celebrated exactly as they are.

Over the past decade, this event has done far more than create a beautiful evening. It has helped our city see people the way God does: as infinitely valuable, deeply loved and uniquely gifted.

In a culture that often defines worth by appearance, ability or achievement, Night to Shine turns that idea on its head. Every guest who walks down the red carpet reminds us that joy, dignity, laughter and belonging are for everyone.

This event celebrates the truth that every person has God-given purpose and deserves to be seen, loved and celebrated.

Parents and caregivers often describe this night as a glimpse of heaven, where their loved ones are fully accepted, without judgment or limitation.

For one evening, they don’t have to navigate awkward stares or apologetic explanations. Instead, they get to dance, laugh and experience the pure delight of seeing their sons and daughters treated like royalty.

What makes Night to Shine so special isn’t just the sparkle of crowns or the lights on the dance floor, it’s the people behind the scenes who make it all possible.

Over the past decade, hundreds of honored guests have been celebrated by their “buddies”, volunteers who spend the evening ensuring each guest feels safe, comfortable and deeply valued.

Behind them stand thousands more who have given their time, talents and hearts, decorating, cooking, setting up, cleaning up, styling hair and makeup, snapping photos and cheering from the sidelines.

Add to that more than $75,000 in donations from local businesses, private donors and nonprofit partners, and you begin to see what has made this night so transformational through the years.

It takes an entire community to create an atmosphere like this, and Scottsboro has risen to the challenge every single year.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Night to Shine hosted by Agape Baptist Church, and preparations are already underway to make it the most unforgettable yet.

To bring this event to life, Agape will need more than 100 buddies, all trained by the Night to Shine team to help guests make the most of the evening.

Additionally, $10,000 to $12,000 in donations, both monetary and in-kind, are needed to cover meals, decorations, limousines, photography, crowns, gifts and all the details that make the night gleam.

Beyond finances and manpower, Night to Shine thrives on the creative spirit of our town. Organizers are inviting civic groups, local businesses, marching bands, cheer squads and even team mascots to join the celebration.

Imagine the smiles when a beloved local mascot stops to take selfies, or when the sound of a live marching band fills the air as families roll up to the red carpet.

For some, Night to Shine may look like just a prom, but those who’ve been there know it’s much more. It’s a moment when the barriers that often divide us disappear. Teenagers, retirees, pastors, teachers, business owners and first responders find themselves side-by-side, united by one purpose: to make someone else’s life better.

Each year, the stories are unforgettable.

A young man who rarely speaks bursts into laughter as he dances with his buddy. A mother wipes away tears as she watches her daughter crowned as a queen.

Volunteers leave changed, realizing that serving others often brings more joy than being served.

That’s what makes Night to Shine truly transformational. It changes how we see others and how we see ourselves.

It teaches us that worth isn’t earned by achievement; it’s given by God. It reminds us that joy multiplies when it is shared.

On February 13, 2026 Scottsboro will once again shine brighter than ever and you can be part of it.

Whether you serve as a buddy, make a financial donation, lend your talents or simply cheer from the sidelines, your involvement matters.

If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like when a community comes together in love, hope and unity, this is it.

Help make the 11th anniversary of Night to Shine a living testimony to what Scottsboro can do when it rallies around a cause that reflects the very heart of God.
