On October 25, three non-profit organizations will gather in Chattanooga to honor the Wright family by cleaning and beautifying their Pleasant Garden gravesites.
Andy and Roy Wright were defendants in the highly publicized Scottsboro Boys case from the 1930s. Their mother, Ada Wright, traveled the world raising funds and awareness to help free her innocent sons.
The restoration is led by the award-winning Scottsboro Boys Museum in collaboration with two non-profits: One Simon Two Rubys and a Hamp, along with Outdoor Afro.
Dr. Thomas Reidy, executive director of The Scottsboro Boys Museum, emphasized that this work is part of the museum’s mission to honor the legacy of the nine victims of racial injustice collectively known as the Scottsboro Boys. “We must never forget the sacrifices the Wright family made after their two sons were falsely convicted and imprisoned for so many years.”
Andy Wright was the last defendant released from prison, in 1950, 19 years after his arrest.
Ana Wright runs One Simon Two Rubys and a Hamp, an organization dedicated to restoring non-perennial care historically Black spaces. She is the granddaughter of Andy Wright.
While visiting the gravesites in August, she recalled feeling “their quiet call to stewardship—and I embraced it as my first family legacy beautification project outside of Alabama.”
Participants will meet in the Pleasant Garden parking lot at 11 a.m. EDT. Complementary lunch will be supplied, so please alert us of any dietary restrictions. Those who are coming from Alabama can take group transportation provided by the museum. If you are interested in taking the museum transportation, email ren@
