Schools will be starting August, and Food for Thought’s Scottsboro and Jackson County food backpack programs will again be providing food for the most food-insecure children. One in four children face food insecurity in Jackson County.
Eight years ago, State Representative Tommy Hanes convened a group of community and school representatives to form a county-wide coalition of food backpack programs called Food for Thought. The purpose was to raise funds to support all the backpack programs in Jackson County. Community partners include the Jackson County Legislative Delegation with the support of State Senator Steve Livingston and State Representative Mike Kirkland, the Mountain Lakes Chamber of Commerce, and the Impact Learning Center.
With the rising cost of food and the rising number of children needing food, the need for funds has greatly increased. All school coordinators have reported seeing a significant increase in the number of children served for the 2024-2025 school year. A typical bag of food that goes home with a child costs $8.00 to $10.00.
You can help by mailing a check to Jackson County Legislative Office at the address below. Also, the three Bruce’s Foodland Stores located in Scottsboro, Stevenson and Section are collecting donations, or you can simply round-up your purchase at the register during the entire month of July.
Last year over 1,000 school children located in Jackson County benefited from the funds raised. Every school in Jackson County and Scottsboro City is served by a backpack program.
