AHSAA reclassifies SHS to 4A

Two weeks ago, The Clarion reported on the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s controversial practices in allowing one school to correct an enrollment reporting error while denying Scottsboro High School the opportunity to remedy a verified mistake. That ruling resulted in Scottsboro being improperly classified as a 5A school for the 2026-2028 classification period.

On Monday afternoon, Scottsboro City Schools Superintendent Jennifer Williams released the following statement acknowledging the AHSAA’s reconsideration and decision to fix the mistake.

Williams stated, “Over the past week, I have had productive and respectful conversations with AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon regarding the reclassification of Scottsboro High School.

I appreciate his willingness to review the data and work collaboratively toward a resolution.
This morning, the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Central Board of Control voted to place Scottsboro High School in Class 4A for the 2026-2028 classification period based on the verified Average Daily Membership (ADM) presented.

I am grateful to the members of the Central Board of Control for their careful review of the data and documentation provided and for making the right decision for our student-athletes.

Throughout this process, our priority has remained clear: to advocate for our student-athletes and ensure they are represented accurately and fairly.

This is a great win for Scottsboro High School and for our student-athletes. With this decision now behind us, we remain focused on winning in the classroom while competing on a fair and level playing field.”

The decision officially moves Scottsboro High School to Class 4A for the upcoming classification cycle, bringing closure to an issue that had drawn significant attention across the local and state athletic community.
