Matthew Allan “Matt” Nelson, passed away on July 30, 2026.
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, August 15, 2026 from the St. William Catholic Church.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his parents, COL (Ret) Ray Allan Nelson and Ruth Ann Thompson-Nelson, of Grant; brothers, Adam Slaughter, Aaron Slaughter and Jeff Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his grandparents, Raymond L. Nelson, Betty Lou Comreid-Nelson, James Thompson and Kathleen Conner-Thompson; as well as his nieces and nephews.
Matt had an avid love of soccer. He adamantly followed the European soccer leagues and watched many of the games during the recent FIFA World Cup.
During the winter season, Matt loved to snowboard and made numerous trips to local ski resorts and Ober Mountain, Gatlinburg TN.
He first learned to ski in the Austrian Alps and later transitioned to snowboarding.
But most of all, Matt loved being with his brothers, especially going to the beach.
He was a “Beach Guy”.
He was always up for an adventure and was the ‘life of the party’.
Matt was also a historian and loved American history; and he had a love of animals and volunteered at the local animal shelter.
