At last week’s regularly scheduled meeting of the Scottsboro City Schools Board of Education, members recognized the Scottsboro High School boys golf team for capturing the program’s first-ever state championship.
Scottsboro High School Principal Jeff Tubbs praised the team’s accomplishment while reflecting on the school’s recent athletic success.
“It has been my pleasure and an honor serving as principal at Scottsboro High School the last two years,” Tubbs said.
“We’ve been blessed athletically.
Last year we won seven state titles, according to many publications, but it was actually eight if you count the state wrestling duels.
This year we had seven state titles again, with two of those being first-time title winners.”
Tubbs noted the golf team’s championship marked one of those historic firsts for the school.
“It was a pretty dramatic finish,” he said.
“It came down to the wire.
They had two solid days of golfing, and it was fun to watch and keep up with it live online.
Our coaches did a great job keeping us informed.”
Individual golfers were recognized during the meeting for their performances at the state tournament.
Connor Hooper finished second overall, while Henson McCrary placed fourth despite competing through an injury.
“Henson played hurt the whole time, so that’s even more impressive,” Tubbs said.
Other team members recognized included Paul Stewart, who finished 10th overall, Jackson Moore, who placed ninth, and Gasper Verer, who finished 20th in the tournament standings.
The board also recognized coaching staff members Kyle Lewis and first-year head golf coach Zach Belvin for leading the team through its championship season.
“Let’s give him a round of applause,” Tubbs said of Belvin.
