The Mayor’s Corner

Scottsboro continues to experience steady growth across multiple sectors, with Mayor Jim McCamy sharing updates on new developments, infrastructure projects, and long-term planning initiatives.

One of the most notable announcements is that Scottsboro has been named a preferred site for a new big box retailer, with more details expected in the near future.

In addition, Harbor Freight opened last week, bringing another national brand to the area.

Retail and dining development is also progressing. A new Waffle House location is expected to go before the planning commission in May and will be built near Home Depot.

While residents have expressed interest in more restaurant options, officials say the challenge remains finding investors willing to bring those businesses to the city.

Recent additions to the local business scene include the Italian restaurant Courtyard Cucina, Dominic’s on the Square, Cars & Cigars, and The Vault on Laurel, which is expected to open in the coming weeks.

McCamy noted that several other properties have recently been purchased, with plans for future business development underway.

Scottsboro is also seeing significant residential growth, with more than 300 homes currently planned or in development.

Work has begun on the Stonebridge subdivision, where crews recently started clearing land and preparing for construction.

Additional projects include Phase Two of Jackson Bend and a proposed development known as The Villas at Belle Hart, which is expected to come before the planning commission soon.

Infrastructure improvements remain a priority.

A drainage project on Scott Street has faced delays due to conflicts with underground fiber and utility lines, but work is continuing as crews coordinate solutions.

The Scottsboro-Jackson County Port Authority is now operational and already moving products, marking a major step forward for industrial growth in the region.

McCamy says the impact is expected to grow significantly as operations expand.
McCamy also announced that he, and other city leaders, are also continuing efforts to secure a federal grant through the Economic Development Administration for a resilience plan, which would support long-term infrastructure and sustainability goals.

A major focus remains on the ongoing effort to bring natural gas to the area.

McCamy has often described the project as the most impactful economic development initiative since the opening of Bellefonte Nuclear Plant in 1972, citing its importance in attracting new industry and supporting regional growth.

At the Scottsboro Municipal Airport, construction is underway on a new maintenance hangar funded through a combination of state, local and economic development sources.

Once completed, the current hangar will be converted into a corporate facility, with multiple aircraft already expressing interest in leasing space.

The city recently acquired property in the Goose Pond area that will provide additional training space for the police department, expanding public safety resources.

Meanwhile, discussions continue around upgrades to local recreational facilities. A committee is currently evaluating improvements to area ballfields, including those at Bynum Park and Veterans Park.

McCamy stated that detailed planning is underway to determine costs, design, and long-term needs before moving forward.

McCamy also addressed recent concerns about the excess sales tax fund being “in the red”.

McCamy explained that the term refers to revenue spent beyond what was budgeted, not a shortage of funds.

Recent expenditures, including major projects and improvements, have utilized those excess funds, reducing the surplus from the excess sales tax fund, but not placing the city in financial distress.

A “State of the City” address is planned for May, where residents can expect additional updates on ongoing projects and future initiatives.

Overall, McCamy says Scottsboro is in a strong position, with continued growth in housing, business development and infrastructure, all pointing toward a promising future.
