Archie F. Stewart Day celebration set for May 28

The Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center will host the annual Archie F. Stewart Day celebration on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 3 p.m. The center is located at 428 West Willow Street in Scottsboro. This event is a celebration of the life and legacy of Archie F. Stewart and has become a cherished occasion for the community. This year’s keynote speaker will be Rev. John W. Jude, and there will be featured music performances from talented artists from Birmingham and Huntsville.

Stewart was a passionate and innovative civil rights leader who served as president of the regional NAACP for over ten years. In 1981, Mayor Roy Owen proclaimed May 23 to be the “Archie F. Stewart Day” in Scottsboro. As a thirteen-year-old boy, Stewart traveled by horse and buggy to attend the first set of Scottsboro Boys trials in April 1931. His civil rights activism continued through to the end of his life. He often spoke about the need to commemorate rather than run away from the Scottsboro Boys case, and he inspired many to bring this injustice to light. His work was activated by a strong faith in God, and he was supported along the way by his wife, Leola.

Stewart’s distinguished career included 36 years in the classroom, over 30 years in service of the Alabama Democratic Conference, and countless years of leadership with the Jackson County Voters League. He was the first and only African American elected president of the Jackson County Teachers Association. He served as a Boy Scout Director for 17 years. After retiring from the school system, Stewart opened the Equal Education Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in the Jackson County Courthouse.

Sadly, this year’s event will carry another special significance, as Stewart’s daughter, Tiajuana Cotton will be remembered. Cotton, who recently passed away in a tragic car accident, was the driving force behind promoting and organizing Archie F. Stewart day for many years. She was passionate about preserving her family’s legacy and honoring the community’s rich history. Her family is committed to carrying on her work and ensuring Archie F. Stewart Day continues to be a memorable and meaningful occasion for the community.

Admission to the event is free and all are welcome to attend.
